How to Make a Free Garden Dragonfly – Using Repurposed Funky Junk

By now you know we love projects, and we also love to save items that we think we can repurpose down the line into something new, creative and fun.  It’s kind of a passion, and Jim is the BEST at saving items and envisioning them as something else.

Sunday he was outside, which is usual for him because he is always working on some project or on yardwork or on organizing his building/garage.  He’s a “do-er”, never one to just sit and relax.

Anyway, he popped into the house to tell me that he just created a huge wooden dragonfly for the yard – using items he had saved from other projects.  It’s recycling folks, and it happens a lot around here.

I was so excited to go check it out;  look how adorable this is!

He said this was a really simple project to do, but he was so absorbed in creation that he forgot to take step by step photos.  That being said, we are confident you guys get the idea on what happened here…..right?

Materials:

1 old wooden porch corner post, 4 old ceiling fan blades, 2 glass pieces from something (not sure what) for the eyes, miscellaneous screws and paint.

He used a saw to taper the end of the pole to look like a tail.

Using screws he attached the 4 fan blades as the wings and used glue to attach the eyes.  You could use marbles for the eyes, or some rocks.

He gave the critter a few coats of spray paint and then sealed it with clear acrylic spray.

Done!

See, we said it wasn’t difficult and that you could do this …..

Just think of how often you see old ceiling fans set out on the curb on trash day;  heck, you could have a whole group of these dragonflies in your yard!

Happy creating – and remember to share this post if you like it.  Check out The Clever Couple on Pinterest
