Thrifty In The Garden Ideas – Our Free Planters

Last night we were excited to get our patio planters finished, and we wanted to share our thrifty idea with you.  (Remember, we are Pinterest friendly, so feel free to “pin” this photo and tell them you saw it on www.theclevercouple.com).

Last year a huge tree fell on our property during a storm.  Jim cut much of the tree into logs and we burnt some in our nightly bon fires last summer.  We’ll finish the rest this summer!  Jim had a fantastic idea for the large sections of the tree trunk, so this Spring he got to work with his trusty chain saw (he loves that tool) and carved out 2 long planters and a short upright planter.

He cleaned off the bark, put drainage holes in the bottoms and lined it with screen (recycled from the trash – another freebie) so it would drain properly.  Last night we filled them with dirt and planted.

Notice the old washtub above that we are also using as a planter?  This too was snagged from a friend’s trash!  100% free!

Because we are avid perennial gardeners we don’t buy many annuals.  The planters in this post were filled with one flat of annual flowers and the rest of the plants were transfers from around the existing perennial gardens.  The geranium you see was a gift from my cousin and the 3 pots by the wood planter below were gifts from my wonderful nieces and nephew for Mother’s Day!  (I love being an Auntie!!  Thanks Stone, Mackie and Rachal!).

I can’t wait to use the Cilantro and Chives as they grow!

We hope you enjoy this glimpse into our garden, and we hope it inspires you to think outside the box when you are decorating outside.  Use your imagination and you are guaranteed to save money!

Remember, we invite you to “Pin” any of these photos and add in your description you found them at www.theclevercouple.com.

Happy planting!
